Matthew 6:9 - 15 (KJV)

After this manner therefore pray ye:

Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: [For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.]

This is a model prayer; the full Lord's Prayer can be found in John 17. It cannot be used as a mantra, and endlessly repeating it will achieve nothing — indeed Jesus forbids it (Matt 6:7).

The model prayer is address to Our Father, that is, God our Father; one never prays to Father God — such does not exist. Name of God is to be held holy and sanctified; His name is to be hallowed and thus His name is to be held in a high and lofty place.

The prayer first tackles God's Kingdom Program being orchestrated by God - it means praying for unsaved family and friends, for a time will come when seeking salvation will too late.

The fourth point concerns our earthly needs - prayer is needed for our debts and bodily needs and we also need to prayer for our church community and its leadership.

The fifth point really highlights that Christ's grace through faith abounds, and we are able to have our sin's forgiven. We know from John that if we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9). This requires confessing our sins, not just skipping over them or ignoring them.

And lastly, as Paul points out to the Ephesians (6:10-20), we are in a spiritual war and need to wear the whole armour of God. We need to pray concerning the struggle with our sin-nature, concerning the war with Satan and the demonic forces.

The model prayer also shows the attitude we must take when praying: a forgiving attitude.

Noting this model prayer was provided under the Mosaic Law - Christ fulfilled the law and Christians therefore make their requests in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.
