1 Peter 4:18

If the righteous is scarcely saved, what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?

Peter writes to believers who are suffering at the hand of the heathen, unsaved and godless people - both Jew and gentile; he writes to encourage them by pointing out that Christ who died for us, suffered much more, without which we would be lost, and secondly, eternity in heaven awaits the believer where there is no suffering. For the Christian the Bible says: God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. For those that have not accepted the Lord God Most High the Apostle Paul writes: But because of your hard and impenitent heart you are storing up wrath for yourself on the day of wrath when God's righteous judgment will be revealed. (Romans 2:5).

The verse is a salient reminder that all have sinned and deserve to die, because the wages of sin is death. For this reason Peter uses the word "scarcely saved". Scarcely in terms of that fact there were very few options available in order to be saved; indeed there were absolutely no options available to humans to escape the wrath of God, except that which could be provided by God himself. Humans are simply too sinful to make themselves right with God. It was only by the love of Christ, who laid down his life for us, that we can be redeemed.
