And the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger."
And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!"

The lowly birth of the King of Kings is announced, not to the world in pomp and ceremony, but to humble shepherds out in the field at night. It is a remarkable entry into this world of the saviour of all those that believe. Humankind had tried for thousands of years to make themselves right before God, but has failed. Here we see the birth of the one, Yeshua, or in our English, Jesus, the Christ, who came to take away the sin of the world.

It also commences the fulfilment of the prophecy of the coming king that will ascend the throne of David and rule the whole world in a coming period. In John's gospel he is viewed as the coming Light - as the world is in total darkness; and furthermore, knowledge of the Saviour was not to be confined to the Jews, but the whole world would be able to enter into His presence, throught faith. Indeed, this was 'good tidings' for all.

And what will this child become?

For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His government and peace There will be no end, Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, To order it and establish it with judgment and justice From that time forward, even forever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this. (Isaiah 9:6-7)
