Jeremiah 17:9, 10

“The heart is deceitful above all things,
And desperately wicked;
Who can know it?
I, the Lord, search the heart,
I test the mind,
Even to give every man according to his ways,
According to the fruit of his doings.

The "desperately wicked heart" literally means a heart sick, beyond cure; death is inevitable. Only by the atoning blood of Jesus Christ can the heart be washed clean. All humans will be judged and given the punishment "according to his ways". In the case of sin this is death, which is eternal separation from God in Hell. The antidote is faith in Jesus Christ, who upon himself, took your punishment at Calvary (Ephesians 1:7; Colossians 2:13, 14).
