For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Three aspects of God’s love are given here: first, "Christ died for the ungodly," for which there is absolutly no merit, indeed humans are unholy and unapproachable (repulsive being unclean souls); second, He did this "when they were without strength" - there was no way a person could ever gain the strenth to do so; third, He did this "at the due time" , as Paul says to the Galations (Gal 4:4), "when the fullness of the time had come"; it was in God' time, on His terms, as an action which man could not enter.
Our cry therefore: "God, be merciful to me a sinner" (Luke 18: 13)
