Satan deceives men and women in two ways by:

(1) Convincing you that salvation is not needed or

(2) Convincing you that salvation can be achieved by you doing something - that is, a performance based approach to salvation where your work accounts for something, in the eyes of God.

The former is re-enforced by the philosophy of evolution (which is a collection of un-proved models). We will leave this for a time and focus on the second. The latter was perfected by the Catholic church, a Church that was found deficient 2000 years ago by the Angel of the Lord who wrote a letter to the Church (see Revelation 2:18), which was re-enforced by the reformers 500 years ago. The issue is whether or whether not you on your very own can expunge the dept of sin you have accumulated, given the simple fact — the wages of sin (and that means any sin) is death (Romans 6:23).

David Hunt (author of The Seduction of Christianity) writes;

Our confidence for eternity rests in His unchanging love and grace and the sufficiency of God's provision in Christ—not in our worth or performance. Only when this is clear do we have real peace with God. Only then can we truly love Him and live for Him out of gratitude for the eternal life He has given to us as a free gift of His grace—a gift He will not take back and which He makes certain can never be lost!  (see

The entire Old Testament tells a story of how humans attempted to get right with God by their own strength. This they did by "doing things" whether baptism or sacrifice or good works or being good (and some were very good), and in every case they failed. The Bible shows that over some 4000 years not one person could deal adequately with sin, including the greatest prophets of God that ever lived. The only person who dealt with sin perfectly is the Lord Jesus Christ; this he did on a cross at Calvary - dying instead of you and paying the price of your sin in full. The only thing you need to do to be justified - that is, made right before God - is to accept Jesus Christ - believe on him and you will be saved.
