Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel.
Isaiah 7:14
Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world. But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons. And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, "Abba, Father!"
Galatians 4:3
Then the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name JESUS. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end." Then Mary said to the angel, "How can this be, since I do not know a man?" And the angel answered and said to her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God.
Luke 1:30-35
Jesus Christ, the Son of God and Messiah, came into the world some 2000 years ago exactly as foretold in the Old Testament, He came to save sinners from the wrath of God, and thus hell. He came as the Messiah as Luke outlines, quoting the Old Testament, and if accepted would have sat on the throne of David in Jerusalem. But he was rejected by Israel and he was crucified by Roman soldiers upon a cross, a righteous man. Of the predictions, the virgin birth marks the uniqueness, and points to his divine origin, the Holy One. This Christmas, although not of Christian origins, marks a day we can speak freely of the birth of Jesus and the purpose of his coming - not to condemn, but to save sinners (John 3:17).
Footnote
The notion that only the Jews were complicit in the death of the Saviour is false. The Jews set up the false accusations and pressured the Roman leaders to kill him (John 18 etc.) but it was Pilate the Roman ruler set in motion the actions and provided the resources to crucify him (John 19:6). The fact Christ had to die in order for redemption to occur is true; if the leaders of Israel had accepted rather than rejected Jesus as their king (Matthew 12:22-32:Luke 11:14-23), the Romans would have executed him anyway, as they would not have tolerated an opposing authority in their dominion.
