Psalm 11

1. To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David.
In the LORD I put my trust; How can you say to my soul, "Flee as a bird to your mountain"?
2. For look! The wicked bend their bow, They make ready their arrow on the string, That they may shoot secretly at the upright in heart.
3. If the foundations are destroyed, What can the righteous do?
4. The LORD is in His holy temple, The LORD's throne is in heaven; His eyes behold, His eyelids test the sons of men.
5. The LORD tests the righteous, But the wicked and the one who loves violence His soul hates.
6. Upon the wicked He will rain coals; Fire and brimstone and a burning wind Shall be the portion of their cup.
7. For the LORD is righteous, He loves righteousness; His countenance beholds the upright.

Temptation comes to all. Here we see how David handled an unnamed temptation whilst in the midst of deep trouble due to significant enemies. We do not know the occasion of David’s words nor whether his words were informed by his failures with Bathsheba, but they remind us that our refuge from any temptation is Jehovah - the Lord who saves. These words remind us that nothing is impossible with God - we might be persecuted in mind and spirit and is perhaps a test from God, as stanza 5 says, but because our war is spiritual, we must rely the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;  praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit (Ephesians 6:10-20).

This psalm also looks forward to the day when the enemies of God are brought to judgement where the wicked will receive their punishment in hell, and believers in Jesus will behold his face.
