His [the LORD's] delight is not in the strength of the horse, nor his pleasure in the legs of a man,
but the LORD takes pleasure in those who fear him, in those who hope in his steadfast love.
Men or women who boast in their material things or their abilities do not please God. It is those that fear the Lord and do His commands, which John says demonstrates a believers love for the Lord, which delights the Lord. Your fear of the Lord has two aspects: wisdom (the fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom Job 28:28; Psalm 110:10) and knowledge (fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge Pro. 1:7), which is also related to wisdom. With both wisdom and knowledge, one that fears the LORD hates sin and evil (Pro. 8:13), in particular pride and arrogance both of which brought Adam down. Proverbs 15:33 goes further and says the fear of the LORD "is instruction in wisdom, and humility comes before honor." Our life needs to be one of humility to deal with the destructive rising of pride that occurs in each one of us, time and time again (Psalm 16:18).
