John 3:17

For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

The wonderful thing about this verse is the focus of Jesus; he came to save. The word does not understand it is lost and in need of a saviour.
A sinner needs rebirth for there is nothing good in a person; it is the work of Christ that enables a new nature to be given a sinner. Nicodemus, whom Jesus was speaking, is perplexed. His ignorance is evident. JC Ryle points out the world is as ignorant as Nicodemus was. It cares not that all people are sinners requiring justification; the Bible proves we cannot ever make ourselves right before God. A believer is not condemned - but is justified. If you don't believe you are already condemned (John 3:18) - death and judgement is your lot. A believer's new life, born of the Spirit, begins with believing Jesus Christ, born of a virgin, whom the world half acknowledges at Christmas, is the Son of God, who came as our saviour, and who died for your and my sin, was buried and rose again. Christmas must look forward to the risen Christ – the saviour of the world – and be able to say as Peter said: "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." (Matt 16:16)
