To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of the Sons of Korah. A Song For Alamoth.
God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble.Therefore we will not fear, Even though the earth be removed, And though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea;
Though its waters roar and be troubled, Though the mountains shake with its swelling. Selah
There is a river whose streams shall make glad the city of God, The holy place of the tabernacle of the Most High.
God is in the midst of her, she shall not be moved; God shall help her, just at the break of dawn.
The nations raged, the kingdoms were moved; He uttered His voice, the earth melted.
The LORD of hosts is with us; The God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah
Come, behold the works of the LORD, Who has made desolations in the earth.
He makes wars cease to the end of the earth; He breaks the bow and cuts the spear in two; He burns the chariot in the fire.
Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!
The LORD of hosts is with us; The God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah
The second to last stanza is the action we need to take: 'Be Still'. Do we ever stop and listen, to breathe in and contemplate Jehovah, the God of Our Salvation. This Psalm, written by someone who has every reason to be afraid, tells us that he is not afraid because he has placed his trust totally in God. And for us, it is time to stop and listen to what the Holy Spirit has to say - to what God Our Father has to say through the Bible. We learn from this psalmist that whatever happens on this earth the God who Saves is with us. There may be war, rumors of war or insurection (Mark 13:7) - but we have no fear; those that trust in the Lord Jesus Christ will be saved - and if death over takes us, the Believer will be taken to heaven to be with Christ.Habakkuk of old, who forsaw the destruction of Judah could write:
Though the fig tree may not blossom, Nor fruit be on the vines; Though the labor of the olive may fail, And the fields yield no food; Though the flock may be cut off from the fold, And there be no herd in the stalls— Yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation. The LORD God is my strength; He will make my feet like deer's feet, And He will make me walk on my high hills. To the Chief Musician. With my stringed instruments.Habakkuk 3:17-19
What assurance we have!
