Genesis 12:1-4

Now the LORD had said to Abram: "Get out of your country, From your family And from your father's house, To a land that I will show you. I will make you a great nation; I will bless you And make your name great; And you shall be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, And I will curse him who curses you; And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed." So Abram departed as the LORD had spoken to him, and Lot went with him. And Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran.

This everlasting promise of God must be read in full and applied literally. The Bible does not record promises of God that He will not undertake or fulfill. Abraham is promised:

  • A land – which the Bible calls the Land of Israel, but called Palestine by many today, a term used by the Greeks and applied to Israel by the Roman. The promise of land to the extent God devised has yet to be entirely fulfilled.
  • A great nation – which under Solomon appeared to be achieved but which will be much greated under Messiah.
  • Abraham’s name was to become great.
  • Abraham’s descendants would be a blessing to the world.
  • Any who blessed Abraham’s descendants would be blessed, which today we need to be mindful of.
  • Any who cursed Abraham’s descendants would be cursed, a warning to antisemites.
  • All the world would be blessed through Abraham – this is through the Messiah, Jesus Christ.

Only those who hate God or are antisemites wash away these words, saying they are not literal, but figurative, and say the Jews do not own the land on which they dwell, or say this was only from 1948, when God gave it to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob’s descendants some 3500 years ago. Sadly, many Christians fall within this camp.
