Matthew 6:19-21

Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

This verse goes with Jesus' earlier statement: 'Jesus said, "No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money." (Matthew 6:24). Our hearts will be mastered by one or the other; it cannot master both.

  1. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. (Colossians 3:2)
  2. Base your identity in Christ — all else will be empty, vexatious, and will wain and rot away. The Apostle Paul only found fulfilment in Christ (2 Corinthians 11). And it is in Christ we will be ready to perform the work God has set out for us (Ephesians 2:10).
  3. Fully surrender your life to Christ: this may mean taking risks as the woman with the mite did (Mark 12:41-44). Pursue the things of Christ — this is an active participation in Christ’s work, not a passive one. ‘Pew warmers’ achieve nothing for Christ. Paul pursued Christ and was a mighty evangelist — he did it at the expense of his own wellbeing (Philippians 3:8), and yet what an everlasting mark he made!
  4. Be a good steward of very area of your life — use the talents you have for God’s advantage, and manage well time and money (2 Peter 4:1); think of others first (Mark 12:31), be content in what you have (Philippians 4:11), love your neighbour (Luke 10:25 - 37).
  5. Help the poor: "But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous”. (Luke 14:13-14)
